| Bansuri Collectif - Conto
The improvisations of the 4 musicians and the dancer of Bansuri Collectif,
mixing acoustic instruments and electronics, are based on Rui Salgado’s
compositions and are inspired by the ancestral tradition of an Indian
flute upon which musicians played sounds suggested by nature.
Koenraad, the guitarist, explores the vast possibilities of electronics
and “prepared” guitars; Frederik, the drummer, joins in
these electro-acoustic experiments, enriching his drum sounds with
noise and percussion. Lander uses his saxophone to reinterpret melodies
by Rui Salgado, the group’s double-bass player and “composer,”
who sees his compositions more as ideas he snatches from the air,
which are then transformed by the research and improvisation process
within the group. Yvan, improvising his choreography, leads the audience
through the chapters of the story told by the Bansuri Collectif. This
is where the CD’s title comes from: “Conto,” which
means “tale” in Portuguese.
The members of the collective share ideals of simplicity and beauty.
They seek to deepen communication and simplify the relationships between
musicians, distancing themselves from the traditional roles assigned
to each instrumentalist. They aim for a common state of mind, homogenous
breathing and mutual respect in the search for different balances
and other harmonies based on the ways in which the musicians naturally
complement each other. Hence each musician is responsible for the
sound in its entirety, each able to determine the tempo, timbre and
melody line… The concept of a “solo” does exist,
of course, but here it is more a result of the work of the whole group
The group is motivated by the desire to rediscover music in its original
state: as an instrument for peace, for personal and collective discovery,
which can escape the homogenisation of present-day society. A voice
which speaks to one’s deep being, a voice that emerges from
those very depths…
