| Charles Loos - piano works
“The pieces on this CD are the result either of specific
commissions or individual requests. I was commissioned to write
the music for solo piano for the ballet entitled ‘Noir/Instantané’
(choreography by Jacques Dombrovski) in 2003 by the Liège
Ballet. Four movements are included here (Rumba, Le Zap, Fox-Trot
and Valse Musette). Some of the passages feature two pianos.
I was introduced to a theme from Northern Europe one day and literally
fell in love with it: it was while we were recording some theatre
music for children (‘L’île aux Crayons’,
Théâtre du Papyrus, 1993) and I had to improvise on
this particular theme. Years later, I decided to write these “Variantes”,
which are dedicated to young student pianists (January 2000).
The piece entitled ‘Wazif’ is, in fact, a long improvisation
(we’ve kept the best extracts), that I did in 2002 while I
was trying out the beautiful Yamaha C6 at the Wazif studio for the
first time. Wazif is where most of the tracks on this CD were recorded.
Finally, the two versions of ‘Ostinato’ (2009 and 2004)
are intended to be conducive to meditation…”
