BRAZILIAN & LATIN MUSIC CAMP in BRUSSELS – 8th edition - august 27th 'til 31st 2012 (+ concerts aug. 31st & sept. 1st)

Level : intermediate & confirmed welcome

Open for all instruments : voice, wind and brass, guitar, keyboard, bass, percussion, drums...

You will learn specific rhythmic and harmonic formulas, and also specific techniques and phrasing used by Latin and Brazilian musicians. You will also play in an ensemble and present the result of your work in a concert on fryday 26th or saterday 27th.

Belgian pianist and composer Charles Loos, to mark his 3 x 20 years, has put together the best of unpublished recording on this cd. 11 original compositions, some of them recorded specifically for this cd.
And the invited musicians who appear on this CD are … 25 in all!

This cd is a musical journey for solo piano.
It was born out of the meeting of two people who happened to speak a so-called ‘universal’ language, actually always different from one place to another – music - , and have together approached the simplest, yet hardest subject of all, Peace.
Two very personal compositions, approximately thirty minutes each, written with open mind to the world, on a same musical motif, interpreted by pianist Weber IAGO

True Irishman Kieran Fahy came up with the idea of asking the Belgian jazzman Jacques Pirotton to work with him at a musical training course he was due to give at Virton in Belgium.
At this unlikely musical encounter, Kieran was won over by the musicality and originality of Jacques’ interpretation of the repertoire chosen for the performance that evening, whish comprised dances (jigs and reels), ballads and the music of Turlough O’Carolan. Drawing on their long experience, these two musicians offer you an emotion-packed, impressively interpreted repertoire from the Emerald Isle.

The "quatre of Qu4tre" -- their fourth release. Continuing the sparkling, relaxed approach of the Belgian 4tet, the energy remains and the music deepens, balancing the harmonies and appeal of pop and rock with the freedom and invention of jazz. This is a real group, committed, long-term and growing only the way musicians who play so long together can.

Anne Wolf sketches out of silence a delicate and sophisticated music that speaks to the heart. The intimate collaboration between piano, bass and percussion, is joined on some tracks by the voices of Christa, Mizzi, Ben Ngabo or Marcia Maria, revealing the colourful shades of Africa or Brazil, making this CD like a grain of sand that grows slowly and surely into a fully formed pearl.

Osman Martins (cavaquinho) and Pierre Gillet (7 strings guitar) demonstrate that Brazilian music reaches far beyond the beloved forms known by casual listeners. Theirs is a deeper, more exploratory take on the music aided in part by their absolute mastery of two unique Brazilian instruments. Together their compositions and arrangements plump native rhythms and possibilities with taste, dazzle and harmonic sophistication.

Wappa Tonic is the story of 5 singers, 2 Latin-americans & 3 Belgians, meeting around an audacious vocal coktail of classic latino and original compositions. They share a common sense of humour and love for crazy rhythms or syncopation.

Created in 2004 on the occasion of the Brussels Jazz Marathon, this quartet offers a modern jazz repertoire, most of which composed by young guitarist Fabrizio Graceffa.
His music is inspired by the sound of musicians from the contemporary New York jazz scene.

“Piano works” celebrates the welcome return of Belgian Charles Loos to solo piano recording. The pieces come from commissions for theatre and dance as well as inspirations meant for quiet meditation. In Loos’ hands, the piano is transformed into a polymorphous orchestra, cascading colors over tracks that range through diverse inclinations, influences, interests. Here is Charles Loos in a work of stunning intimacy and accomplishment.

Weber Iago 's music is unpredictable, but self-evident. It is always suprising but logical, innovative but clear. Weber possesses a rare rhythmical confidence and a breathtaking harmonic creativeness as demonstrated by this collection of piano solo compositions and improvisations. Just listen and be carried away to a timeless place where "everything is order and beauty", as Baudelaire would say...

This Paolo Loveri’s first CD as leader and main composer. This project has been carefully developed and rigorously fine-tuned by the musicians over a long period of time. Paolo Loveri formed the trio with Benoît Vanderstraeten and Bruno Castelluci. Here, they are joined by Pietro Condorelli, Paolo's teacher and maestro of the jazz guitar in Italy. The repertoire is essentially made up of original compositions.

The improvisations of the quartet Bansuri Collectif, mixing acoustic instruments and electronics, are based on Rui Salgado’s compositions and are inspired by the ancestral tradition of an Indian flute upon which musicians played sounds suggested by nature.

The music of Alexandre Furnelle opens the door to a unique and magical world where improvisation and composition come together, where discovery rhymes with emotions and dancing energy.

A tribute to the music of Belgian guitarist and composer Paolo Radoni who died on december 21st of 2007. His compositions are played by his friends, "Radoni's Tribe”. Musical direction and arrangements by Michel Herr.

Henri Greindl's guitar has travelled from the sounds of European jazz to the beaches of Brazil with a stop over in laid back California. His compositions are memories of these different stylistic influences or musical ports visited. This is a collection of some fifteen tunes that have been recorded in Belgium and in the Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo and Fortaleza, with some of the best musicians from the local scenes. 

Stéphane Mercier and Charles Loos have been playing in a "traditional set-up" quartet since 2006 only, and even though the chemistry and its magic was present from the very first note they played, the group gained maturity in an unusual fast manner. "Walking the Soul Map" proves it. Whatever the material is: originals, standards or covers, the quartet offers deep swing, melancholy, energy, humor, and at times all of it together...

Al Orkesta fuses folk and ethnic styles with rock and jazz to produce a series of 'off centre' musically interesting pieces that provide creative space for the soloists.

In his third album “Un eco de palabras”, hailed by the famous Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti, the Argentinean pianist/composer Gabriel Sivak and his group perform seven new compositions, evoking as many journeys between Paris and Buenos Aires.

Musician of many talents, composer and guitarist Pierre Van Dormael (may 24, 1952 - Sept. 03 2008), has been an essential figure of the Belgian Jazz scene, and had a significant influence on several generations of musicians. This album, carefully prepared, recorded and mixed by himself shows a side of his talent rarely heard on CD : an intimate and acoustic album alternating solo pieces and duo with Senegalese guitarist Herve Samb. The repertoire is made of personal compositions, chosen standards, and covers of the years 70’.

This project celebrates the meeting with Malian culture and the friendship with Malian percussionist Sidiki Camara.

The music on this CD is the result of two years of playing with my quartet. Daniel, Theo and Lionel are stimulating musicians who pushed me to rethink my way of composing.

Also to be found, music from Baden Powell and Luís Bonfá arranged by the great Sérgio Assad. Boris Gaquere also proposes his own music imbued with the colours of Brazil. There is in Boris a marvelous control of the guitar, a beautiful essential rhythmic sprightliness for this demanding repertoire. He finds in Renato Martins, straight out of São Paulo, an ideal partner for these melodies.”
